Ein paar Modelle besitzen Beine aus Karbonfasern anstatt Aluminium, was sie bis zu 25 Prozent leichter als ihre Herausforderer macht. Wie konstruiert man ein Stativ, das kompakt und leicht und zugleich robust und lang genug ist?
Die Beine bestehen in der Regel aus Aluminium oder Karbonfasern und besitzen drei, vier oder fünf ausziehbare Segmente. Klemm- oder Drehverschlüsse dienen zur Einstellung der Höhe. Eine Ummantelung sorgt für angenehme Handhabung bei Kälte. Die meisten Stative besitzen Gummifüße, welche aber oft versenkbare Spikes enthalten, um einen sicheren Halt auf losem Boden zu gewährleisten.
Da die meisten Reisestative bereits im oberen Bereich sehr dünne Beine besitzen, sind die unteren Sektionen anfällig für Verbiegungen. Um dieser Gefahr vorzubeugen, müssen Hersteller von Reisestativen Verschlussmechanismen entwerfen, die fest und sicher schließen. Hauptsächlich werden hier Klemm- oder Drehverschlüsse verwendet. Bei einem guten Stativ sollten die Verschlüsse stets fest verriegeln, dabei die Leichtgängigkeit der einzelnen Segmente im geöffneten Zustand gewährleisten und für eine ausreichende Steifheit auf der Gesamtlänge des Beines sorgen.

Geringes Packmaß
Reisestative sind auf ein kleines Packmaß hin konstruiert. Erreicht wird die Kompaktheit durch um 180° umklappbare Beine, Unterteilung in mehrere Beinsegmente, aber zum Teil auch auf Kosten der maximalen Arbeitshöhe.
Geringes Gewicht
Reisestative sollten leicht sein, weshalb als Rohrmaterial fast immer Carbon (sehr leichter Verbundwerkstoff aus Kohlefaser und Kunststoff) verwendet wird. Die aufwendige Herstellung des Kohlefaserwerkstoffs macht sie vergleichsweise teuer. Eine gute Alternative sind Aluminium-Stative. Das Leichtmetall ist sehr viel günstiger als Carbon, aber rund dreimal schwerer und etwas schwingungsempfindlicher.
Beinsegmente und Stabilität
Manche Stative gibt es wahlweise mit drei oder vier Beinsegmenten. Durch die mehrfache Unterteilung erreichen die Hersteller ein geringeres Packmaß, was für Reisestative optimal ist. Stative mit wenigen Beinsegmenten bieten aber grundsätzlich mehr Stabilität. Gleicher Rohrdurchmesser, gleiche Arbeitshöhe und gleiches Material vorausgesetzt.
Füße
Standardmäßig sind Dreibeinstative mit Gummifüßen ausgestattet, die auf herkömmlichen Untergründen sehr gute Standsicherheit bieten. Meist lassen sich die Gummifüße gegen Spikes tauschen, idealerweise sind sie sogar darin integriert. Teller- oder Saugfüße sind bei keinem der Reisemodelle Standard. Bei einigen Herstellern aber als optionales Zubehör erhältlich.
Generell gilt: Je wuchtiger und schwerer ein Stativ, desto stabiler steht die Kamera. Bei Reisestativen sind diese beiden Eigenschaften ein absolutes Ausschlusskriterium. Je leichter und kompakter, umso besser. Damit trotzdem eine gute Stabilität erreicht wird, setzen fast alle Hersteller auf den Werkstoff Carbon (genauer CFK – carbonfaserverstärkter Kunststoff). Das Material ist bekannt aus Gebieten, in denen eine genau definierte Steifigkeit bei einem vorgegebenen Gewicht gefordert ist. Beispielsweise in der Luft- und Raumfahrt, im Fahrzeugbau oder bei Sportgeräten.
